Electro-slag Remelting Casting (ESRC)

SRIF has taken the profound research of principal theory and application of ESRC technology, and a lot of work has been done on temperature distribution simulation, perfection of advanced casting process and etc. for abnormity castings used in power station. The achievement of variable camber casting was successfully developed by ESRC technology and won the second prize of National Scientific and Technological Progress Award in 2007.
The industrial base of ESRC covers 3200 m2, it has four ESRC furnaces with capacity of 700kVA、2000 kVA、3000 kVA、8000 Kva, by which ESRC castings of 0.1-80t/piece can be produced. Now the production capacity can reach 4000 tons per year. For many years,it has supplied over ten thousand tons of premium ESRC castings to dozens of large and medium hydraulic power stations at home and abroad, such as Three-gorge. The products are exported to USA, Japan, France, Canada, Brazil, Russia, Austria, Vietnam, Turkey and etc.
Main products: Turbine blade, non-uniform plate, diaphragm pump crankshaft, MW wind-power torque shaft, bimetal bucket tooth, drums for medicine making machine,hollow pipe with thick wall, gear rack for shiplift, and etc.

The main advantages of ESRC castings

  1. Progressive solidification and self padding, the density of products is much higher than sand casting.
  2. Slag refining, the sulphur content and other impurities are reduced. The toughness, fatigue and welding ability is higher than sand casting.
  3. The result of ultrasonic test can meet the requirement of CCH70-3 and highest level of ASTM A609.it is 1-2 higher than the result of sand casting.
  4. Cavitation resistance is increased by 30% as compared with sand casting.
  5. Metal mold casting process, less environmental pollution.

The principle of ESRC
        ESRC process completes electro-slag remelting refining and casting in the same time, so the castings produced by ESRC have not only good inner quality, but also good material property. AT the beginning of ESRC process a poor of molten slag with a depth of 100-200mm is formed at the bottom of a crucible. When the consumable electrode connected with power sources submerged into the molten slag, strong electric current passes through the slag pool exceeds the melting point of the consumable electrets from the end of the electrode falls through the slag pool by gravity. In this process, the harmful elements and the impurities in the consumable electrode are lowered, the molten steel is refined. The molten droplets through the slag pool form a metal pool under the slag pool, the metal is gradually solidified by strong circulated cooling water and at last form a casting. In ESRC process, the melting of the consumable electrode, the filling and the crucible is full filled, and thus a casting is being made from the bottom to the top of the crucible gradually.
